What is a Mad Science camp? Mad Science camps are designed for exciting fun hands-on science activities. Your child will become a junior scientist for the week, having the opportunity to experience a variety of science adventures. We use an inquiry-based technique that allows even the youngest camper to enjoy learning. Children will design, create, build and assemble a variety of interesting projects and will take at least one project home every day. We will provide everything your child will need. Children should dress comfortably and come ready to have some fun!
Where can I find the camp schedule? The camp schedule is on our registration site. Click here to view our schedule or to register for camps.
How long has Mad Science been running camps? We have been running our week long summer camps in the Austin area since 1998 and in the in the San Antonio area since 2005. Mad Science of Austin and San Antonio is a franchise of The Mad Science Group. There are over 150 Mad Science franchises all over the world. The Mad Science Group has been providing Mad Science programs for over 20 years. Our programs are created by a team of professional scientists and teachers at our head office, in Montreal, QC. Millions of children in over 160 locations, in 22 countries have enjoyed our programs.
What is the child to instructor ratio? There will be no more than 25 children in each camp. Each camp will have 2 instructors.
What ages are the camps designed for? Camp number 6 is designed for preschool children. If you have a 5-year old child who is entering first grade, they may also enjoy our camps 1 through 5, 8, and 9. However, they need to be a child who is not easily frustrated, has some reading skills, and does not mind being helped. Camp number 7 is restricted to children at least 7 years old or entering 2nd grade because of the fine motor skills required. All other camps with the exception of Camp number 6 are designed for ages 6 - 12.
Are different aged children in the same camp? Yes. We use a buddy system whereby the older children will sometimes help the younger ones. Also, with two instructors in every camp, there is always plenty of help. For most of the activities, the children work in small groups.
Who are the Mad Science camp instructors? Most of our instructors are people who have worked for us in our after-school programs that we conduct in over 60 schools every spring and fall semester. All of them have experience working with children. We also run a criminal background check on each instructor. A CPR and First Aid certified instructor is always on a Mad Science camp site. They also receive summer-camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!
Do you offer extended care? We do offer late pick-up (from 4:00pm - 6:00pm) for our 7-hour per day camps. The charge for this is $75 per week. Early drop-off is available on our 7-hour camps. You can drop your child off from 8:00am -9:00am for no additional charge.
How do I register my child for a camp? If you are paying by American Express, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover you can register online here or call us to register on the phone. If you are paying by check or money order, you can register online and print your confirmation to send it in with your payment. Due to limited spaces in each camp, we cannot reserve a space for your child until we receive your payment. If you are paying by check, we do not reserve a space until we receive your check.
How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child? This is the toughest question we get because we have no idea. Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible. Since we offer the option to deposit your payment the month prior to the camp start date, if you elect our deferred payment plan, there is no reason to wait. Register early to reserve your child a space!
What is the difference between a 3-hour per day camp and a 7-hour per day camp? We are offering our camp numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 as a 3-hour camp and a 7-hour camp. We will cover the same material, but with the 7-hour camp, we are able to go into topics and experiments in more depth. We will also do more activities in the 7-hour camp.
Is payment due in full when I register? Yes. However, you can select from 2 different payment options. You can have us deposit your payment in full (within 2 weeks of registering) or you can elect our deferred payment plan. With our deferred plan, we will charge your credit card or deposit your checks on the 15th of the month preceding your desired camp date. (For example: If you sign up on February 1st for a camp that starts on July 6th, your credit card will be charged on June 15th.) If you are paying by check you can send in separate checks for each month. If you send in only one check, it will be deposited the month prior to your first scheduled camp.
What is your refund policy? If you cancel within 4 weeks prior to the camp start date, a $75 cancellation fee per camp will be charged. After the first day of camp, if your child does not wish to continue, the $75 cancellation fee will be charged and the balance will be refunded. However, you must call Mad Science at (512) 892-1143 or (210) 651-1143 prior to the start of the second day of camp to obtain a refund. After that, no refunds will be given. If we do not get sufficient enrollment to hold the camp, we will return your check or not charge your credit card. If we have already deposited your payment, we will give you a full refund. There is no fee charged if you cancel more than 4 weeks prior to the applicable camp start date.
Can I sign my child up for more than one camp? Yes. Many children sign up for multiple camps. Each one is totally different so that your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities.
Do you offer sibling or multi-camp discounts? Yes. The multiple camp discount applies to multiple camps for one child or multiple camps for siblings. Check the Camp Costs tab for a list of camp costs. At this time, the online registration system is not capable automatically applying multiple camp discounts. You will need to enter the coupon code multicamp to apply the discount to your order. If you have multiple orders, please call our office at 512-892-1143 or 210-651-1143 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will apply the discount for you. If you are paying by check, please take into consideration the discount and send the payment for the discounted amount.
My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before? The camp numbers have remained the same as the ones that we have used in the past. For example, if he/she has taken Camp 1 before, many of the activities will be the same. However, each year we make some changes so there will be a few different things. We have had a lot of children take a particular camp again and still enjoy it the second time.
My child has taken a Mad Science camp before, but I do not remember which one? Call us at 512-892-1143 or 210-651-1143 and we will be happy to look it up for you.
Do you provide a lunch with the 7-hour camp? No. You must send a sack lunch with your child. We will provide a mid-morning snack and a mid-afternoon snack. (Exception: Lunch is included in the price of camp at Gatti·Land.)
What do you provide for snack? Snacks like pretzels and goldfish crackers are provided. The snacks that are part of each camp day are not a significant amount of food. If your child would benefit from some additional calories during the day, please pack additional snack items. We often have snack-tivities that may include other food items. If your child has any allergies or dietary restrictions, we ask that you please send your own snacks. Water is available throughout the day. We also encourage children to bring water bottles labeled with their name to camp.
At some of the locations, it appears that you are offering 2 or more different camps on the same weeks. Is this correct? Yes. We have access to more than one room at some locations so we will be running multiple camps at the same time. Each camp will still have two instructors and its own space.
What should my child bring/wear to camp? Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, specifically no flip-flops. Also, as we will be outside on a number of occasions, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent, or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful. We also encourage children to bring water bottles labeled with their name to camp. Refrigeration will not be accessible at our camp-sites. For full-day camps, we require parents to send a lunch and any additional needed snack items. PLEASE AVOID PEANUT BASED FOODS. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to the camp.
Medical Information about your Camper Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science full-day summer camp, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper. You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind. By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.
What if I see a particular camp and dates that I want, but you are offering it on a morning or afternoon that will not work into my schedule? Call us and we will visit with you about it. When we set up our schedule, we arbitrarily pick a morning or afternoon session for many of our camps. When that session fills, we will then open the corresponding afternoon or morning camp. Many times we get sufficient enrollment to be able to hold the second camp. You can also periodically check our website to see if we have added camps.
Are these the only locations where you will be holding your camps this summer? Maybe not. We may be adding locations, especially in the outlying areas. Also, if you can get at least 20 children and can provide a location, we will bring a camp to you. Usually, we can customize something to fit the times and dates that you want. Call us. We would like to visit with you about this.
Are Mad Science camps licensed by the State of Texas? Mad Science camps are not licensed by the State of Texas. Our camps have been exempted by the Texas Department of Health from licensing because our activities do not include traditional camp activities such as horseback riding, archery, and swimming. Mad Science has also received an exemption from Child Care Licensing because we are a skills program which meets the exemption criteria under TAC 745.129 (2). If you have any questions, please contact us at (512)892-1143 or (210) 651-1143.
Do Mad Science camps pose any physical risks to my child? Mad Science camps do not include any specific activities which would cause physical risks to children in our care. Since our camps do not include activities such as swimming, horseback riding, or archery, any physical risk would be the same as normal life. If an incident should occur such as a scraped knee, fall from a tipped chair, or bump of any kind it would be reported to parents with a call or a report upon pick-up depending on the injury. A CPR and First Aid certified instructor is always on a Mad Science camp site.
Start your own Mad Science camp If our schedule does not work with YOUR schedule then bring Mad Science to you! All you need is 20 children and a safe place to hold the camp! We may even be able to adjust the start time, length of the day, number of days, or customize our programming to exactly match your needs.
